THE UNIVERSITY OF RUSE AND PARTNERS FROM 3 COUNTRIES PRESENTED AN INNOVATIVE CONCEPT AND APPROACHES FOR WORKING AND RAISING PEOPLE WITH SPECIFIC EDUCATIONAL NEEDS AT A SEMINAR
On October 8th and 9th, the University of Ruse "Angel Kanchev" hosted the final meeting and seminar of the project "Introduction of STICORDI measures in the Balkans (focus on dyslexia)". The events involved experts from the project team from Turkey, Cyprus and Bulgaria, who over the past 2 years have joined their efforts in analytical, research and creative activities to develop handbooks for educators and parents and a specialized platform to support everyday challenges, which they face when working and raising children and youth with specific educational difficulties.
The project has an innovative character and transfers the experience and concept approved in Belgium for working with such persons to the legal framework and possibilities of the Bulgarian and Turkish educational systems and their national characteristics. STICORDI is an acronym denoting a broad, flexible and open set of educational measures aimed at providing inclusive environments and approaches that stimulate the development of students with special educational needs. The interventions, adapted on the basis of the original Belgian concept, are divided into 5 leading categories - stimulation, individualized and collective compensation, remediation and releasing the student from tasks or requirements that are impossible to fulfill, given his specific status. They were presented today (09.10.2024) at a seminar at the University of Ruse, aimed at the pedagogical staff of kindergartens and schools, representatives of organizations - providers of social services, psycho-, art- and occupational therapists, representatives of local and regional public administrations, non-governmental organizations and parents with an interest in the topic. At it, the participants discussed the possibility of applying the developed measures in the Bulgarian conditions and the benefits of introducing this approach, as well as the need for subsequent methodological, technological, normative changes and continuing training to guarantee a supportive educational environment for persons with specific educational needs. The interventions offered by the project team are tailored to the deficits that occur in cases of neurobiological disorders such as dyslexia and to modern trends for individualized and student-oriented education.
The seminar is held in two identical presentation sessions to multiply the results achieved by the international team of the STICORDI project, financed by the Erasmus+ program, under the leadership of the University of Ruse. In the next two months, the proposed set of measures will be tested in a real educational environment.
The developed handbooks for teachers and parents will be distributed through the project platform https://elearning.sticordi-dyslexia.eu/ and the related mobile applications, which are freely accessible.
